    Mirrors

    Mirrors

The Mirrors collection is an exploration of light and architecture. It explores the art of reflection and refraction: how light bounces off and passes through colors and patterns, and is reborn as something completely new.

Homage is paid to the complex patterns found in traditional Islamic geometry, which developed Greek, Roman and Sasanian styles into more sophisticated forms. Shapes are overlapped, interlaced and compounded to produce abstract masterpieces of design, reminiscent of the Islamic world’s great monuments.

In the 7th century, the Silk Road allowed Muslim merchants to trade not just their wares, but their ideas and beliefs, across the world. Islamic monuments sprung up as far as China. Meanwhile, Iraqi potters mirrored the aesthetics of Chinese blue and white porcelain, now synonymous with the Ming Dynasty. Elsewhere, blue and white hues featured throughout several Islamic monuments, from the Blue Mosque in Istanbul to the Great Mosque of Cordoba, and the Dome of the Rock.

The Mirrors collection draws upon these colors, which represent purity and life. Meandering shapes in varying shades of blue, set against pure white backdrops, reinvent and deconstruct traditional Islamic geometry, reconfiguring them into something new – shining the light of ancient artforms through a modern prism.
